Distinguish wear from damage
A polished edge on a wooden table tells a different story from a loose joint. Before replacing an object, identify the actual problem. A repair can address the structure while leaving the marks of everyday use intact.
Try a small area first
Different finishes respond differently to cleaning and care. Follow the maker's instructions when they are available, and test any unfamiliar product out of sight. More product and more pressure rarely make a delicate surface easier to maintain.
Choose for the room you have
Samples are useful only if you bring them into the space where they will live. Look at a material next to existing floors, textiles and walls. The most persuasive showroom combination may feel completely different in a smaller, cooler or more heavily used room.
